Suriname physical map

Description:
This map shows landforms in Suriname.

Suriname is located on the northern coast of South America, bordered by French Guiana to the east, Guyana to the west, and Brazil to the south. The country covers an area of approximately 63,252 square miles (163,821 square kilometers), making it the smallest independent state in South America.

The physical geography of Suriname can be divided into two main regions: the northern lowlands and the southern highlands. The northern region consists of a coastal plain and savanna belt, while the southern part features dense rainforest and mountainous terrain. The highest point in the country is Juliana Top (1,280 meters or 4,199 feet), located in the Wilhelmina Mountains.

The country's major rivers flow northward into the Atlantic Ocean, with the Corantijn, Coppename, and Maroni Rivers being the most significant waterways. These rivers play a crucial role in transportation and the country's ecosystem. The coastal plain, which is mostly below sea level, is protected by a complex system of dams and drainage canals.

Suriname's landscape is dominated by tropical rainforest, which covers approximately 80% of the country's territory. The Van Asch Van Wijck Mountains and Eilerts de Haan Mountains form part of the country's southern highland region, characterized by numerous rapids and waterfalls.
