Sudan Physical Map

Description:
This map shows landforms in Sudan.

Sudan is located in northeastern Africa, bordering seven countries and the Red Sea. The country covers an area of 1,861,484 square kilometers (718,723 square miles), making it the third-largest country in Africa. The terrain is predominantly flat with several distinct geographical regions.

The northern part of Sudan is dominated by the Nubian Desert, which is part of the larger Sahara Desert. Along the Red Sea coast, the Red Sea Hills rise to elevations of more than 2,000 meters (6,562 feet). The highest point in Sudan is Mount Kinyeti, reaching 3,187 meters (10,456 feet) above sea level.

The Nile River system is the country's most prominent geographical feature. The Blue Nile and White Nile converge in the capital city of Khartoum to form the main Nile River. The fertile Nile Valley contains most of Sudan's agricultural land and supports the majority of the population. In the central and southern regions, the landscape transitions into savanna grasslands and the Nuba Mountains.

The western region includes the Darfur area, characterized by the volcanic Marrah Mountains and semi-arid plains. The eastern region features the Taka Mountains and the Butana plain, which extends between the Blue Nile and Atbara rivers.
