Sri Lanka is an island nation located in South Asia, positioned in the Indian Ocean southeast of India. The country has a total area of 65,610 square kilometers (25,332 square miles), making it slightly larger than the U.S. state of West Virginia.

The island's topography is characterized by a mountainous region in the south-central part, known as the Central Highlands, with the highest point being Mount Pidurutalagala at 2,524 meters (8,281 feet). Another prominent peak is Adam's Peak (2,243 meters), which holds religious significance for multiple faiths. The highlands are surrounded by broad plains, with extensive coastal lowlands forming a belt around the mountainous interior.

Sri Lanka features several major rivers, with the longest being the Mahaweli River at 335 kilometers (208 miles). The country's coastline stretches for 1,340 kilometers (833 miles) and includes numerous natural harbors. The island's landscape includes tropical rainforests, which primarily occupy the southwestern region, and dry plains in the northern and eastern sectors.

The island's geological foundation consists mainly of metamorphic rocks dating from the Precambrian era. Limestone deposits are found in the northwestern region, while gem-bearing deposits are concentrated in the southwestern area.
