Quebec is the largest province in Canada by area, covering 1,542,057 square kilometers, and the second most populous with approximately 9 million inhabitants as of 2025. Located in eastern Canada, Quebec shares land borders with the province of Ontario to the west, New Brunswick to the southeast, and the U.S. states of New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine to the south. The province also borders Newfoundland and Labrador to the northeast. Quebec's name derives from an Algonquin word meaning "where the river narrows," referring to the narrowing of the Saint Lawrence River near Quebec City.

The Saint Lawrence River serves as Quebec's principal waterway, flowing from the Great Lakes to the Atlantic Ocean and forming one of the world's major navigable routes stretching approximately 1,200 kilometers. Quebec possesses substantial freshwater resources, with water bodies occupying 12% of its total area. The province contains over 500,000 lakes and 4,500 rivers. Lake Mistassini is the largest natural lake, while the Caniapiscau Reservoir represents the largest inland water body. More than 90% of Quebec's territory lies within the Canadian Shield, an ancient geological formation of Precambrian rock. The province's landscape includes three major geological regions: the Laurentian Highlands, the Saint Lawrence River valley, and the Arctic lowlands.

Mont D'Iberville, located in the Torngat Mountains on the border with Labrador, stands as Quebec's highest point at 1,652 meters above sea level. The Appalachian Mountains extend into southern Quebec, forming part of the province's diverse topography.

Quebec City, the provincial capital, had a population of approximately 549,000 in 2021, while the metropolitan area reached 839,000 residents. Montreal is Quebec's largest city and Canada's second-largest urban center, with a city population of 1.76 million and a metropolitan area of 4.29 million as of 2021. Other major cities include Laval, Gatineau, Longueuil, Sherbrooke, and Lévis. Approximately 80% of Quebec's population resides in the Saint Lawrence River valley, where the major urban centers are concentrated. French is the sole official language of Quebec, with over 77% of residents reporting it as their mother tongue in 2016.
