Newfoundland and Labrador Roads

The road network in Newfoundland and Labrador consists of approximately 9,900 kilometers of paved and unpaved highways. The provincial highway system is maintained by the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure and connects major population centers across the island of Newfoundland and parts of Labrador.

Highway System

The Trans-Canada Highway (Route 1) serves as the primary east-west corridor, spanning 905 kilometers across the island from St. John's to Port aux Basques. This highway connects most major municipalities and provides access to ferry services linking the province to mainland Canada.

Route numbers in Newfoundland and Labrador range from 1 to 510. Major routes include Route 2 (Burin Peninsula Highway), Route 10 (Viking Trail), and Route 430 which extends to L'Anse aux Meadows, the site of the only confirmed Norse settlement in North America.

Labrador Highway Network

The Trans-Labrador Highway (Route 500) was completed in 2009, connecting Labrador West to coastal communities. This 1,149-kilometer route provides the first continuous road connection between Labrador City and communities along the Labrador coast, including Happy Valley-Goose Bay and Red Bay. Prior to its completion, many Labrador communities were accessible only by air or sea.

Characteristics

Many rural roads remain unpaved or partially paved due to challenging terrain and dispersed population centers. The province experiences severe weather conditions, requiring extensive winter maintenance including snow clearing and ice control operations. Several coastal communities still rely on ferry services as roads are not economically feasible due to geographical isolation.
