About John F. Kennedy International Airport
John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) is a major international airport serving New York City, located in the borough of Queens. Originally opened in 1948 as Idlewild Airport, it was renamed in 1963 following the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. The airport covers approximately 4,930 acres and operates five passenger terminals connected by the AirTrain JFK automated people mover system.
JFK serves as a primary hub for American Airlines and Delta Air Lines, while also functioning as a focus city for JetBlue Airways. The airport handles over 60 million passengers annually, making it one of the busiest airports in the United States. It offers direct flights to destinations across six continents, with particularly strong connectivity to Europe, Asia, and Latin America.
The airport features four parallel runways, with the longest measuring 14,572 feet. Terminal facilities include Terminal 1 (operated by Terminal One Group), Terminal 4 (operated by Delta and international carriers), Terminal 5 (JetBlue's hub), Terminal 7 (British Airways and other international airlines), and Terminal 8 (American Airlines).
Transportation access includes the AirTrain JFK connection to the New York City Subway and Long Island Rail Road, as well as numerous bus routes, taxis, and ride-sharing services.
JFK generates significant economic impact for the New York metropolitan area, supporting hundreds of thousands of jobs directly and indirectly. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey operates the airport and continues to invest in infrastructure improvements and modernization projects.
