South Africa Political Map
Description:
This map shows governmental boundaries of countries, provinces and provinces capitals, cities, towns, villages, main roads, railroads and airports in South Africa.
South Africa's political map represents the current administrative divisions of the country, which consists of nine provinces: Eastern Cape, Free State, Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, Northern Cape, North West, and Western Cape. These provinces were established in 1994 following the end of apartheid and the transition to democracy.
Pretoria serves as the administrative capital, Cape Town as the legislative capital, and Bloemfontein as the judicial capital. This unique three-capital system was established in 1910 when the Union of South Africa was formed.
The country shares borders with Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Eswatini (formerly Swaziland), and Lesotho, which is completely enclosed within South African territory. South Africa's coastline stretches more than 1,739 miles along both the South Atlantic and Indian Oceans, from the Namibian border in the west to the Mozambican border in the east.
Each province has its own legislature and executive council, operating under a quasi-federal system established by the 1996 Constitution. Provincial boundaries were drawn to incorporate former homelands and bantustans, which were abolished after apartheid, into a unified democratic state.
