Tshwane, officially known as the City of Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality, is the administrative capital of South Africa. Located in the northern part of Gauteng Province, it encompasses the city of Pretoria and surrounding metropolitan areas. With a population of approximately 4 million people (2016 estimate), it is one of the country's largest metropolitan municipalities by both area and population.

The metropolitan municipality was established in December 2000 through the merger of several previously independent municipalities, including Pretoria, Centurion, Soshanguve, and other adjacent areas. The name "Tshwane" comes from the Setswana word meaning "we are the same" and refers to a local chief who lived in the area during the 19th century.

As South Africa's administrative capital, Tshwane hosts numerous government buildings and foreign embassies. The Union Buildings, which serve as the seat of the South African government and the office of the President, are located here. The city is also an important educational center, home to institutions such as the University of Pretoria, the Tshwane University of Technology, and the University of South Africa (UNISA).

The economy of Tshwane is diverse, with strong automotive, aerospace, and defense sectors. The city hosts several major automotive manufacturers, including BMW and Ford. Additionally, it is home to the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), South Africa's central scientific research organization.

Tshwane experiences a subtropical highland climate with long, hot summers and short, cool winters. The city is known for its purple jacaranda trees, which bloom in October and November, earning Pretoria the nickname "Jacaranda City." Notable landmarks include the Voortrekker Monument, Freedom Park, and the National Zoological Gardens of South Africa, which is the largest zoo in the country.
