About Pforzheim

Pforzheim is a city in Baden-Württemberg, Germany, with approximately 135,000 inhabitants, located at the northern edge of the Black Forest where the rivers Enz, Nagold, and Würm converge. Known as the "Goldstadt" (Golden City), Pforzheim has been Germany's center for jewelry and watchmaking since the 18th century. The city suffered devastating destruction in a February 1945 air raid that killed one-third of the population and destroyed most of the city center.

The Jewelry Museum (Schmuckmuseum) in Reuchlinhaus displays jewelry spanning 5,000 years, from ancient civilizations to contemporary pieces, showcasing Pforzheim's craftsmanship tradition. The Technical Museum of the Pforzheim Jewelry and Watch Industry documents the city's industrial heritage with demonstrations of traditional jewelry-making techniques. The Gasometer Pforzheim houses the world's largest panoramic artwork showing ancient Rome in 312 AD.

The St. Michael's Church tower, one of few historic structures surviving the 1945 bombing, stands as a memorial. The reconstructed Market Square features modern architecture integrated with preserved elements. The Wildlife Park in the Enz valley offers nature observation opportunities.

Pforzheim University specializes in business, design, and engineering, particularly jewelry and industrial design. The city's economy continues to focus on jewelry manufacturing, precision engineering, and information technology. The surrounding Black Forest provides recreational opportunities. Bertha Benz's 1888 automobile journey began in Mannheim and passed through Pforzheim, marking automotive history. The city represents resilience, having rebuilt after wartime destruction while maintaining its specialized industries.
